Albury Wodonga Social Connections (AWSC) was established in 2024 by social workers Barb Palmer and Sheree Rudder. Driven by a shared vision, they recognised a growing need within the local community for safe and inclusive opportunities for people with disability to meet others, practice social skills, and develop meaningful friendships.
In response, they created a welcoming space where individuals with diverse needs can come together and build genuine social connections within their community.
Since its establishment, AWSC has continued to grow and evolve, now supported by a dedicated team of regular volunteers including Josh McPhee, Rachel Coleman, Barb Palmer, Bella Toole, and Leah Bridle-Eastick. Together, this team plays an important role in creating inclusive, engaging, and well-supported events that foster connection, confidence, and a sense of belonging.

At Albury Wodonga Social Connections, we are committed to inclusivity, diversity, and respect. We welcome individuals from all backgrounds and work to foster a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment for everyone.
We believe that everyone has the right to meaningful social connection, a sense of belonging, and opportunities to participate in their community in ways that feel comfortable and enjoyable to them.
Our events are designed to be flexible and accessible, recognising that people engage in different ways. Whether someone chooses to join in activities, observe, socialise, or simply be present, all forms of participation are valued and respected.
We are guided by a strengths-based and person-centred approach, focusing on what individuals can do, their interests, and what matters to them. We promote choice, autonomy, and dignity in all interactions.
We also value collaboration and community. Through the support of our volunteers and the broader community, we continue to create inclusive spaces that encourage connection, confidence, and positive social experiences.
Social Connection events are coordinated and supported by a dedicated team of qualified and experienced allied health therapists, disability professionals, individuals with lived experience, and behaviour support practitioners who generously volunteer their time to make these events possible.

Social Connection events are coordinated and supported by a dedicated team of qualified and experienced allied health therapists, disability professionals, individuals with lived experience, and behaviour support practitioners who generously volunteer their time to make these events possible.
This volunteer-led approach allows us to create events that are not only well-supported, but also genuinely community-driven. Our team brings a broad range of skills, knowledge, and perspectives, helping to ensure that events are inclusive, responsive, and meaningful for those attending.
Volunteers play an active role in facilitating activities, supporting engagement, and creating a safe and respectful environment where people feel comfortable to connect at their own pace. Their presence helps to reduce barriers to participation while maintaining a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.
We recognise and value the contribution of our volunteers, whose ongoing commitment and passion are central to the success and sustainability of Albury Wodonga Social Connections.
